What you're working on

A solo wall drill that combines dinking, speed-ups, and reset volleys in one continuous sequence. The drill trains the critical skill of transitioning from a controlled dink exchange into blocking a fast ball and resetting the point, a scenario that occurs constantly in match play. Ideal for solo practice with just a paddle, a ball, and a wall.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED
1 paddle, 1 ball, solid wall

Drill Set Up

One player, a paddle, a ball, and a solid wall. Stand a few steps back from the wall in an athletic ready position, knees slightly bent, weight leaning slightly forward.

How to run it

  1. Begin hitting soft dinks against the wall, finding a comfortable rhythm.
  2. After 3 to 4 dinks, flick the ball with pace to speed it up off the wall.
  3. The ball returns fast, block it with a controlled reset volley back towards the wall.
  4. Re-establish the soft dinking rhythm and repeat the sequence.
  5. Continue the pattern: dinks, speed up, reset, dinks.

Coaching Points

  • Maintain a consistent athletic stance throughout, knees bent, slight forward lean.
  • The reset volley after the speed-up is the critical skill here, stay composed and absorb the pace rather than matching it.
  • Be ready for the fast return the moment you speed the ball up, do not relax after the flick.
  • Use the dinking phase to reset your position and breathing before the next speed-up.
  • The goal is to train the transition between soft play and fast play, and back again.
