What you're working on

A no-ball drill designed to build and reinforce the muscle memory of both forehand and backhand swings. By removing the ball entirely, players can focus completely on footwork, body mechanics, and smooth paddle movement without the distraction of tracking and hitting a moving target.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED
1 paddle, open court space (no balls required)

Drill Set Up

One player, a paddle, and an open court space. No balls required.

How to run it

  1. Take up a ready position on the court with your paddle in hand.
  2. Perform a forehand swing, focusing on a smooth, controlled motion from preparation through to follow through.
  3. Return to the ready position and repeat on the backhand side.
  4. Alternate between forehand and backhand, incorporating footwork into each swing.

Coaching Points

  • Focus on smooth, fluid paddle movement, do not rush or tense up without the pressure of a ball.
  • Use correct footwork on every swing, treat each shadow swing as a real shot.
  • Pay attention to body mechanics, rotation, weight transfer, and follow through should all be present even without a ball.
  • Use this drill to fine-tune specific technical issues in a low-pressure environment.
