What you're working on

A collaborative warm-up drill designed to get the hands moving and the brain engaged at the start of a session. By stepping inside the kitchen, players deliberately reduce reaction time, forcing faster hand speed. The goal is not competition but cooperation, building rhythm and warming up together before progressing to faster-paced drilling later in the session.

Drill Set Up

Two players, one on each side of the net, both stepping inside the kitchen line.

How to run it

  1. Both players step inside the kitchen, closer to the net than usual.
  2. Begin volleying the ball back and forth cooperatively, keeping it moving continuously.
  3. Start at a comfortable pace and gradually increase speed as hands and reactions warm up.
  4. Focus on keeping the rally alive rather than winning points.

Coaching Points

  • The aim is collaboration, keep the ball moving and build rhythm together.
  • Stepping inside the kitchen removes reaction time and naturally forces faster hands.
  • Start controlled and let the speed increase organically as you warm up.
  • Keep the mind engaged, this drill wakes up both hands and brain ready for the session ahead.
