What you're working on

A high-energy, competitive group drill that simulates king-of-the-court style play. With teams rotating in and out based on rally results, players get constant reps at both the kitchen line and baseline under real game pressure. The fast-paced format and minimal downtime between rallies make it an excellent drill for building both skill and match toughness in a group setting.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

Drill Set Up

A minimum of 8 players, split evenly across both sides of the net and paired into teams of 2. One team starts at the kitchen line on one side, with their first opponent team starting at the baseline on the opposite side. Remaining teams on each side wait behind their respective baselines, balls in hand and ready to feed.

How to run it

  1. The waiting baseline team feeds the ball to start the rally.
  2. The kitchen line team and the baseline team play out a normal, live rally, hard or soft shots allowed.
  3. If the kitchen team wins the rally, they earn a point and remain at the kitchen line for the next rally.
  4. If the baseline team wins the rally, they earn a point and move up to the kitchen line for the next rally.
  5. The losing team exits to the side and joins the back of the rotation queue on their side of the court.
  6. The next waiting team steps in at the baseline, already holding a ball, and feeds immediately to start the next rally.
  7. Continue play with teams always staying on the same side of the net throughout the session.
  8. The first team to reach 5 points wins.

Coaching Points

  • Stay ready, the next team in line should always have a ball in hand to keep the game moving without delay.
  • Winning the rally earns a point regardless of starting position, both the kitchen and baseline teams are competing for points every rally.
  • Treat every rally as a real competitive point, the format rewards consistency and the ability to perform under pressure repeatedly.
  • Communication with your partner is essential, especially when transitioning from baseline to kitchen line after a win.
  • The drill builds match toughness through volume, embrace the fast pace and minimal rest between points
