THE EXERCISE

What you're working on

A return of serve drill focused on consistently landing returns deep in the back third of the service box. By setting a clear target zone and introducing a consecutive hit challenge, the drill builds the depth and precision needed to keep opponents pinned at the baseline. Players also develop the habit of moving forward after the return to advance towards the kitchen.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED
2 paddles, balls, targets placed in the back third of the service box

Drill Set Up

Two players, one serving and one returning. Place targets in the back third of the service box on the server's side to mark the target zone.

How to run it

  1. The server serves continuously from their side of the court.
  2. The returner focuses on landing every return past the targets in the back third of the service box.
  3. Work through a set number of repetitions before switching roles.

Coaching Points

  • Prepare early, have the paddle, footwork, and body position ready before the ball arrives, aiming to beat the bounce.
  • Transfer body weight into the swing and step into the court after contact to begin moving towards the kitchen.
  • Stay consistent, depth is the priority on every return.
03 / VARIATIONS

Make it work for your group

  • Consecutive challenge: Hit 5 or 10 returns in a row past the target before moving to the next position or switching roles.
  • Shot variety: Mix between drives, forehands, backhands, and lobs throughout the drill.
  • Spin: Add topspin or slice to returns to develop variety and disguise.
