What you're working on

A team drill that trains the transitioning players to reset the ball and work their way to the kitchen line under pressure, while the established kitchen line team tries to keep them back by extending the rally rather than going for outright winners. The drill builds patience, communication, and the specific skill of resetting twice before advancing, a common and demanding scenario in real doubles play.

Drill Set Up

Four players. Two players positioned at the kitchen line as feeders/defenders. Two players positioned in the transition zone (mid court) as the resetting team.

How to run it

  1. The kitchen line team feeds the ball to the transitioning team, hitting with pace but not going for winners, the aim is to extend the exchange.
  2. The transitioning team must reset the ball, so it bounces, twice in total. The resets do not need to land in the kitchen, just bounce.
  3. After the second reset bounces, the transitioning team moves forward from the transition zone towards the kitchen line.
  4. Once both resets are complete, the point becomes live and all shots are allowed.
  5. The transitioning team continues working their way fully into the kitchen line position as the point plays out.
  6. Reset and repeat, with teams able to play to a score, kitchen team to 11 points, transitioning team to 7 points.

Coaching Points

  • The kitchen team should extend the rally, not chase winners, the point is to make the transitioning team work for their resets.
  • The transitioning team needs two clean bounced resets before advancing, rushing forward early breaks the drill.
  • Keep the paddle face pointed at the target to improve reset accuracy.
  • Use a soft grip, tension in the hand makes consistent resets much harder.
  • Communication between the transitioning partners is essential, call shots and coordinate the move forward together.
  • The transitioning team should advance gradually and under control, not rush all the way to the kitchen in one step
