New to pickleball? You're in the right place.
Most players started exactly where you are now - curious, a little unsure, and wondering if they're going to look ridiculous. The answer is: maybe briefly. But so did everyone else. And within about fifteen minutes, none of that matters.
Here's what to expect.
It's simpler than you think
Your first pickleball session isn't a lesson in the traditional sense. You'll be shown the basics - how to serve, where to stand, how the scoring works - and then you'll be playing. Not drilling endlessly. Actually playing.
Because pickleball is played on a smaller court with a slower ball, the learning curve is genuinely quick. Most beginners are rallying back and forth within the first session. And because it's almost always doubles, you're never stood on court alone trying to figure it out.
No pressure to be perfect. No expectation that you've done this before. Just give it a go.
What you don't need to bring
- Your own paddle - most venues and clubs provide equipment
- A partner - sessions are set up so you can turn up solo
- A racquet sports background - it helps, but it really isn't necessary
- Peak fitness - pickleball is low-impact and the court is small
- All the rules - you'll pick them up as you play
Just turn up in comfortable clothes and a decent pair of trainers. That's it.
Why people keep coming back
The first session is usually about curiosity. You wanted to see what all the fuss was about.
By the second or third session, something shifts. You start recognising faces. You get a feel for the game. You stop thinking about where to stand and just play.
A few weeks in and you're improving without really trying. You're looking forward to it in a way you didn't expect. The games feel competitive but never serious. It's the kind of sport where you can have a proper match with someone twice your age or half your fitness level, and it's still a good game.
Before long it's part of your week. And you're going as much for the people as the game.
That's pickleball. It has a habit of doing that.
