Sheffield has been quietly building the UK's most active pickleball scene for the past two years, and the numbers now confirm what regular players in the city have suspected for a while: nowhere else in Britain has more courts, more clubs, or more weekly sessions relative to its population.

Much of Sheffield's advantage comes down to infrastructure it already had. A high concentration of underused badminton halls and old squash courts across the city gave local leisure operators an unusually cheap route into the sport, and they took it early.
